Mother with her Child

About me and why I set up Nourishing Motherhood

My name is Hilary and I am a Wiltshire based mummy to a little boy and twin daughters. My feeding experiences with my children were very different but they have all have benefited from breastmilk. My Little boy suffered with poor weight gain and was diagnosed privately with an anterior tongue tie at 8 months. I was very determined to breastfeed him, and he exclusively breastfeed until he was 18 months old. My twins were born by emergency c- section at 34 weeks, they spent a month in NICU and were initially tube fed. My twins were given expressed breastmilk by tube and once the tubes were removed, we began our journey of triple feeding (pumping, attempting the breast and then bottle fed) unfortunately I was only able to directly breastfeed my girls on a few occasions, but I expressed breastmilk for them to have in a bottle for 10 months with a combination of formula too. My feeding journeys have been very different, but I also feel that they may have also been more successful if I’d had the support which I needed in infant feeding.

After reflecting on my own experiences with my children I decided to research how I could support new mothers in their feeding journeys and began to volunteer at the local hospital. I still felt that when a mother was discharged there was a huge gap in the support available for them. For example waiting 7 days for your next local breastfeeding support session when you have a new-born baby who is struggling to latch makes it almost impossible to succeed. It is for this reason that I started Nourishing Motherhood. To be able to provide mothers with detailed knowledge and confidence in breastfeeding before their baby is even born can have great impact on their feeding outcomes as well as being there when required for more hands-on support when baby has been born.

I am a qualified Infant Feeding Coach, registered with FEDANT and a qualified nursery nurse for over 16 years.
